Mankind, in its history, is known for being naturally curious. Ever since our ancestors have first set gaze upon the stars above; they have longed seek for answers to how the universe truly works. Although having limited resources and technology to let them see what they were looking for, that did not stop them from trying. Fast forward a hundred years later; now having the capability to explore far beyond our own planet, we are stuck in a constant debate to as whether or not to continue exploring.

Civilization's constant progress and success in it’s continuity stems from its ability to improve its methods in doing so. The fact that we are choosing to solve petty conflicts and problems here on Earth rather than exploring the frontiers of space is a danger in our survival as a species. Some may argue that it is inevitable that we are going to explore far beyond our planet that is why we should leave it in the hands of later generations and solve our current domestic feuds. But why not start early on? Earth’s resources are limited. Why waste precious materials in waging wars to destroy our own if we can use it for the good of all mankind? Who knows how long Earth can sustain the needs of our current population. To this, we space enthusiasts say, Lets go to Mars!

Colonization might be a very ambitious project to take on especially considering that we have no prior experience in how we might do so. The Philippines doesn’t even have its own space agency. But isn’t it all the more reason to go? Humans are stubborn, we shouldn’t be surprised if we are able to pull this off. Just imagine how big this may be if we are able to establish a colony on Mars. The colonization of Mars will ensure the survival of mankind for at least a couple more millenia.

Before colonizing Mars we must first develop the technology to be able to do so. Yes, we currently can reach Mars, unfortunately we are only limited in sending rovers on its surface but we are in near in sending the first homo sapiens to touch the red planet. The Mars colonization effort alone is beneficial to us even before we land on the planet. Going to Mars creates new industries which may open up hundreds of jobs and opportunities. In this effort, nations may be united under one common goal. Going to Mars might be one step forward in achieving world peace.

From the very first steps of European colonists in Asia and the Americas to our very first steps on the surface of the moon. It time we also set our foot on the surface of Mars. Our generation might just be the very first humans to be able to land on distant planets; building the foundation of interstellar travel for generations to come. This is why nations should commit themselves to science and technology. If it cannot prioritize space exploration, at the very least be able to put up programs that promotes technological advances. We cannot move on as a species, divided. Every individual from all aspects of life are needed in order to attain this goal. Students, workers, professionals, dreamers, believers; everyone is included.
